Scruff said: Chaplain Charles braves the itch for No Shave November in support of Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center

Hey there, friends,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some personal thoughts with you. This November was a No Shave November; I decided to embrace the beard (with some occasional trimming, of course). Why? Because I'm passionate about supporting the incredible patients and families at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, where I serve as a chaplain.

Chaplain Charles Chaplain Charles grows out his beard for No Shave November.

Cancer has touched my own family, but it's through my role as a chaplain that I've truly encountered the diverse experiences of those beginning their journey with cancer, from the earliest stages of life to the complexities of adulthood. I've witnessed the profound impact of cutting-edge treatments, new trials, groundbreaking research and seeing individuals respond to care in truly healing ways. The significance of well-staffed hospitals and outpatient centers in addressing the holistic needs of individuals cannot be overstated.

Over two years ago, I joined the Massey family to be a part of these stories, caring for the spirits of patients, families and staff in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Donations play a crucial role in enhancing the care we can provide, and being a part of this community has been incredibly fulfilling.

On a lighter note, No Shave November has never posed a challenge for me in terms of growing a beard. The real challenge? My coarse beard that never stops itching! Yet, it's a small discomfort I willingly endure, especially when I think about the cause—raising funds for Massey, an organization I deeply believe in. Without this purpose, I doubt I'd keep the beard.

Some might see growing facial hair as a lighthearted gesture, but when I grow my beard, I see the motivations of No Shave November— simple acts of support for those facing illness.

So, as November comes to a close and I finish with the discomfort of an itchy beard, I invite you to join me in supporting the fight against cancer. Consider making a donation to Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center by visiting https://www.support.vcu.edu/give/Massey. Sometimes, it's the small gestures that make the biggest difference. One team! One Fight!

Wishing you warmth and kindness,

Chaplain Charles
