According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 85 percent of all foodborne illness could be prevented if people handled food properly. In the video below, VCU Health dietitian Allie Farley provides simple tips on proper food safety and hygiene.

Placing cooked or ready-to-eat foods back on a plate that held raw meat

  • Thawing food on the counter
  • Eating foods containing uncooked eggs and flour
  • Undercooking meat, poultry, seafood or eggs
  • Not washing produce
  • Not washing your hands
  • Not replacing sponges and dish rags
  • Not storing leftovers properly
