VCU Massey Cancer Center researcher Steven Grant, M.D., was recently recognized with an appointment to a major cancer journal and continued financial support from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, for his world renown work in discovering new therapies for hematological malignancies.  Grant is the Shirley Carter Olsson and Sture Gordon Olsson Chair in Oncology Research, associate director for translational research, co-leader and member of the Developmental Therapeutics program and member of the Cancer Cell Signaling program at VCU Massey Cancer Center.

On August 1, 2012, Grant began serving as deputy editor of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, the American Association for Cancer Research’s journal of drug discovery and development.

As deputy editor for reviews, Grant solicits and oversees the peer review process for both invited and non-invited manuscripts and makes final decisions regarding publication. In addition, he provides input regarding the journal’s strategic vision for the future and manages a number of additional editorial functions.

“Undoubtedly, Dr. Grant will be a valuable asset to Molecular Cancer Therapeutic’s editorial team,” says Gordon Ginder, M.D., director of VCU Massey Cancer Center. “His appointment reflects his many achievements in moving promising new therapies from the laboratory to the patient bedside.”

The appointment continues until December 31, 2015.

Grant was also recognized for his promising translational research by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest nonprofit health organization devoted to eliminating blood cancers. The Society recently awarded him an additional two years of funding under its Translational Research Program, which is focused on reducing the time between laboratory findings and actual treatment.

The grant, totaling $200,000, will help support the development of novel therapies for leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Tri Nguyen, an instructor in the Department of Internal Medicine, conducted in Grant’s laboratory the studies upon which the award is based.

“I am very thankful for the continued generosity of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,” says Grant. “This funding will directly support the development of clinical trials testing new therapies for blood cancers at VCU Massey Cancer Center.”
