Tremayne Robertson appointed as director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Tremayne Robertson joined VCU Massey Cancer Center on July 1 as the director of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). In his role, Robertson will lead initiatives promoting DEI in Massey practices, procedures, policies, personnel and patient care.

“DEI can and does inform the work being done daily at Massey,” said Robertson. “The most meaningful way to encourage DEI is to be reflective and start with the self. Be introspective and grow that analysis into action at the level that is most meaningful for you at that time.”

Robertson joined Massey after three years at the University of Virginia, where he was an assistant dean of students. Previously, he held positions at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, VCU, George Mason University and Syracuse University. Robertson also serves as a board member of the Virginia Sexual & Domestic Violence Action Alliance based in Richmond. The Action Alliance is Virginia’s leading voice on sexual and domestic violence.

“Tremayne’s experiences not only on academic campuses but also in communities align with Massey’s mission to serve all people, regardless of race or ethnic group, gender, sexual orientation, disability or creed,” said Robert Winn, M.D., director and Lipman Chair in Oncology at VCU Massey Cancer Center. “His appointment will allow us to accelerate efforts to address health disparities and increase access to screenings and care to people who have been underserved for far too long.”

To amplify DEI at Massey, Robertson plans to work collaboratively across the cancer center, the VCU Health System, VCU’s Monroe Park campus and the 65 contiguous localities in central, eastern and southern Virginia comprising Massey’s catchment (service) area. 

“Massey has a national reputation for clinical care and research innovation regarding cancer. Also, cancer connects and impacts people from all demographic and philosophical differences,” explained Robertson. “I am excited to work with people with different expertise and interests that are all unified to create a future without cancer and health disparities.”

Currently, Robertson is completing a Ph.D. from Syracuse University in Cultural Foundations of Education. His professional background in student affairs, academic affairs, intergroup dialogue and Title IX compliance will inform and benefit his work at Massey.
“Let's start where we are, invite others to the table and roll up our sleeves and put in the work to make national headlines that have a local impact,” he challenged. “We all have both an individual and collective opportunity and obligation to advance DEI at Massey from our respective vantage points.”
