VCU Medical Center has been recognized as the No. 1 hospital in the Richmond metro area and the No. 2 hospital in the commonwealth by U.S. News & World Report in its 2023-2024 Best Hospitals rankings. Massey’s cancer care was recognized as “High Performing.”

As the region’s only comprehensive Level I trauma center verified for pediatric, adult and burn patients and central Virginia’s largest safety net provider, VCU Medical Center has been recognized as the No. 1 hospital in the Richmond area for 13 years in a row.

VCU Medical Center also improved in the overall state ranking, moving from No. 3 to No. 2 in Virginia.

"This recognition reflects the unrelenting efforts and collective commitment of our exceptional team members, clinicians, researchers, and support personnel,” said Michael Roussos, president of VCU Medical Center. “It motivates us to continue striving for excellence in every aspect of patient care, medical education, and scientific discovery."

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions; only 12% of evaluated hospitals earned a Best Hospitals ranking. Hospitals awarded a “Best” designation excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, level of nursing care and patient experience, according to U.S. News.

The publication recognized VCU Medical Center as “High Performing” in the following programs: cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; gastroenterology and GI surgery; orthopedics; and pulmonology and lung surgery. Adult specialties are designated as “High Performing” in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average.

VCU Medical Center also earned the highest ranking possible on 14 critical procedures and conditions. Those services include:

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• Colon cancer surgery
• Diabetes
• Heart attack
• Heart bypass surgery
• Heart failure
• Hip replacement
• Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma
• Lung cancer surgery
• Ovarian cancer surgery
• Pneumonia
• Prostate cancer surgery
• Stroke
• Uterine cancer surgery
